GSMA OneAPI Briefings and Hack-a-thons
Calling Canadian Developers - Join a GSMA OneAPI Hack-a-thon
WIP is pleased to be working with the GSMA, Aepona and three Canadian carriers - Bell, Rogers Communications and TELUS on the Canadian Pilot of GSMA OneAPI.
This initiative is still a PILOT.
We need developers to work it, play with it and tell us WHAT YOU THINK.
So join us as we host a series of sessions that include an Information Briefing followed by a Hack-a-thons in these cities:
- - Montreal: Thursday, May 13 Register now.
- - Ottawa: Monday, May 17 Register now.
- - Toronto: Tuesday, May 18 Register now.
- - Vancouver: Thursday, May 20 Register now.
Meet the folks from GSMA, Aepona, Bell, Rogers and Telus, and be eligible for some prizes and devices.
Format of Sessions = Info Briefing + Hack-a-thon
Information Briefings:
All are welcome to attend these one hour sessions to find out about the GSMA OneAPI initiative and how you can participate. Come prepared with your comments and questions!
Hack-a-thons:
Well they are more of a API-a-thon - but that didn't sound right! We'll spend three hours getting you to code to the network API of your choice (messaging, location, billing). We suggest you come in teams of at least two people: one person who can get down and dirty with the code and one person who can get analytical about the processes and business model. Bring your laptop and an application you want to port to the network GSMA OneAPI. We'll provide the open access, technical and support teams on site, sample code if needed, and connection to the internet.
We anticipate the coding time to take about an hour (so THEY say). Then we'll hang out with beer and pizza and get to hear your feedback; and give away some prizes.
Please indicate on the Registration page if you intend to participate in the Hack-a-thon. Limit of 15 companies per location.

So what's this GSMA OneAPI thing!!??
Very simply put... Its a set of network API specifications developed in public and based on existing web standards and principles. Any network operator/carrier or service provider is able to implement GSMA OneAPI. It’s intended in to complement existing client-side and Web APIs by providing the missing piece: access to network capabilities and information, regardless of operator. The first API specifications to be published and nearing completion are the Messaging (SMS and MMS), Location and Payments available in both RESTful and Web Service flavours.
And where does Canada fit into this?
Would you believe it? The first pilot of GSMA OneAPI is taking place in Canada! No kidding! Our three major operators - Bell, Rogers and Telus actually got together and decided this was a great idea, so agreed to work together. Yes, we are still gob smacked.
What the Canadian GSMA OneAPI Pilot means is a single gateway is provided for Web application developers. GSMA OneAPI will connect you to all 3 of the major Canadian Operators starting with this commercial pilot that is to run until July 2010. Other international operators will follow shortly! So get in on the ground floor now!
The first APIs now available are:
- Messaging,
- Location, and
- Payment.
Jam ON!
Can't wait, have questions, or unable to attend?
