Mobile Jam Session
Friday, September 12, 2008
A day for Developers! No ppt, no ties, no panels and it’s free.
It all starts as we open up the mobile ecosystem and connect experienced and talented developers, with industry experts and decision makers. We know this is often difficult at big conferences, but the Mobile Jam Session makes it possible.
The day includes:
- An unpanel discussion
- Improv sessions led by developers and industry leaders alike, where everyone gets a chance to be heard and have their questions answered
- Developers pitching their applications
- And a Wrap party!
Topics we will likely cover includes:
- Specific topics such as mobile payments and messaging
- Developer resources such as certification, porting and developer programs
- Tips on penetrating the big guys and getting to market.
Most importantly this event is driven by developers so it all depends on YOU:
- What do you want to hear?
- Who do you want to talk to?
- What do you want to say?
Sign up. Let us know. We make it happen.
Here's the Agenda for San Francisco Mobile Jam! Expect a few iterations between now and September 12 - we want to make sure we are giving you what you asked for. Any comments, or perhaps you'd like to be a discussion leader? Let us know.

TOPICS
1. Safe Surfing - Mobile Security and Anti-viruses Are the new open platforms ripe for viruses? What's coming, what you need to know and do to safeguard your software and your customers. Discussion Leaders:
- John Hering, Flexilis
- Tim Haysom, CMO, OMTP
2. Getting to Market Where are the distribution and channels that really work and give developers a good piece of the action? Strategies on getting ahead of the pack Discussion Leaders:
- John Philips, Product Director, Connect2Media
- Venetia Espinoza, Director, Partner Programs, T-Mobile
- Mikael Nerde, Head of Content, Sony Ericsson Developer World
3. Clash of the Titans - Mobile Banking and Payments The financial ecosystem is more complicated than the mobile ecosystem. Where do developers play in this game amongst titans? Discussion Leaders:
- Natalie Jo, Senior VP Global Growth Ventures and Innovation, Citigroup
- Jeppe Dorff Ramlau-Hansen, Clickatell
- Leila Modarres, Director of Marketing, Device Anywhere
4. Shaken or Stirred: developing for convergence Is convergence Mobile 2.0 or Web 2.0 gone mobile? Developing new applications and widgets for new browsers and run time environments. Discussion Leaders:
- Raj Singh, VP Business Development, Skyfire
- Sean O Sullivan, CTO, Dial2Do
- Jai Jaisimha - VP, Mobile Product and Tech Development, AOL
5. Its all about the Phone What is really different about the mobile phone compared to a PC? What features on devices really stimulate better services and how should developers have access to these capabilities. (Camera, sensors, touch screen, screen size, codecs, SIM, security features, NFC, Bluetooth, WLAN, 3G & higher bandwidths, Battery life!?) Who decides on device attributes anyway? Discussion Leaders:
- Winston Choe - CEO, Innoscape
- Asokan Thiyagarajan - Technology Evangalist, Motorola
- Jens Greve, Head of Developer World - Sony Ericsson
6. The Matrix Uncovered: Porting, Testing and Certification "I know why you're here, Neo. I know what you've been doing... why you hardly sleep, why you live alone, and why night after night, you sit by your computer." Thousands of handsets, lots of operating systems, carriers requirements keep developers up at night. Learn tips from the pros. Discussion Leaders:
- Paul Poutanen - President, Mob4Hire
- Vincent Berge - President and Co-Founder, Mobile Distillery
- Brent Melson, VP Technology, NSTL
- Ilja Laurs, CEO, GetJar
7. Ingredients for third party over-the-top services What do you need if you want to roll your own third party services and sell them, promote them directly in a given country, or better still, worldwide? You're going to have to figure out: Access Number and SIP termination in all territories, the not so simple SMS (and MMS, fugeddaaboutit!), Answering Machine and VoiceMail detection (there is none, which screws up certain styles of offerings), mix of business models (e.g. clash between caller and receiver pays across different territories), hosting services that are Telco service friendly (telco hotels). And so on....... Discussion Leaders:
- Sean O Sullivan, CTO, Dial2Do
- Peter Baldwin, Mobile Enabling Technology Consultant
8. User Experience - Mobile use cases and best practices What makes a great digital Experience? How do you get it, maintain it, and update it without going crazy? What can be learned from iPhone? When should you build a mobile website versus a mobile application? What do consumers really expect and is making something "easy to use" really profitable and measurable? Are there shortcuts - like web services, SDKs, patterns, open source groups and local meetups - that can make this all easier to learn and keep up with? We'll throw around lots of realistic answers to these, talk about best practices in mobile, and discuss how to break down big problems into more simple use cases to solve. Be ready to jot down some great resources for online and local collaboration as well. Use cases and Best Practices mean different things to different people and that is okay. They all have implications for Business, Technology, and User. For Developers with an agile point of view, these topics will not be new, but it should be helpful to probe some thoughts around what is most important to users vs developers and the impact on developing with that mindset. Discussion Leaders:
- Candy Bernhardt, User Experience Architect @ Nokia
- Harold Neidhardt, CMO & Co-Founder, Smaato
UnPanel #2 - The Broken Path to Market - from investors to customers 4:00pm - 5:00pm
Where's the money? Following the path from investors to customers and all links in-between. We'll hear from investors as to why they aren't funding. The difference between market opportunities vs cool technology. Let's find out where the current and future revenue and business models. How do developers make choices and get rewarded, cause the ecosystem doesn't work with out developers! Moderators / Facilitators:
- Caroline Lewko, WIP
unPanelists:
- Paul Leeper - Director Business and Market Development, Ecosystem and Market Development, Motorola Inc.
- Venetia Espinoza, Director, Partner Programs, T-Mobile
- Marc Faucher, JLA Ventures & Blackberry Partners Fund
