WIP is proud to be an active participant of the Mobile and Wireless Developer Community!

We often get asked to clarify the size and scope of this community so here are a few of our answers:

What is the mobile and wireless developer community?

We think the mobile and wireless developer community encompasses the entire mobile and wireless developer ecosystem - a mouthful for sure! This is an industry with a lot of players, all of whom are important in bringing applications to market. We observed over many years, that the very successful development companies were the ones that not only understood their ecosystem, but were 'connected' to many of the players in it. By 'connected' we mean that they knew people on an individual basis. We started WIP to help the developer community understand their ecosystem, and more importantly 'connect' to it.

In 2008, we published a chart (see below)to represent this Ecosystem providing everyone a better picture of WHO the players were (all the categories in the middle). The x/horizontal axis represents a point in time of WHERE you are in the development and go to market cycle. The y/vertical axis represents the WHAT type of development you are doing from Devices to Content. Based on your own x/y coordinates; you should be able to pinpoint WHO you need to meet to find the valuable connections. Our WIPwiki is based on this ecosystem chart and is your market intelligence to find the companies necessary to speed your time to market.

Who is a mobile developer?

Mobile development has changed exponentially over the last 2 years since the entry of the iphone, but wireless and mobile development goes back over 20 years. Traditionally a mobile developer was a real 'techy', educated first as electrical engineers who needed to know the all the nuances of working with wireless spectrum. Then the computer software engineers came along; and now mobile development is also the pervue of web designers and content creators who bring a different perspective and different skills to this dynamic industry.

WIP published the WHO IS A MOBILE DEVELOPER diagram in June of 2008, where we realized that the mobile developer definition was striating further; and the notion of them just being the 'technies' was no longer working. The definition wasn't working as it lacked the respect of the upper echelons of the mobile ecosystem; it didn't represent the multiple hats many of the technical people play in a start up; nor did it include the new comers who were embracing the mobile web.

Who is a Mobile Developer by WIP

Today the mobile developer community is represented by the wireless engineers and computer scientists, enterprise developers, open source developers, web designers, content providers, gamers and even the CEOs of mobile startups.

They are all our hero's for their guts to tackle the latencies of wireless; the demand and creativity demanded by our users; and their pioneering strength in this nascent industry called mobile!

How many mobile developers are there?

This is a question that confounds many, and it depends if you want a definition of anyone who has looked at code (the perverbial geek in the basement)or signed up for a developer program. Do you want to know #s of individuals or #s of companies. In 1998 WIP estimated there were over 100,000 mobile development companies world wide. Evans Data estimated the number of mobile developers was 6 million, and anticipated that number to grow to 19 million by 2010. Its an area we will continue to study.
