Description:

Data overload?  Or data hogs?
Whatever the cause of the data capacity crunch, it is clear that the exponential growth in mobile data consumption in the past few years, fuelled by a huge surge in smartphone use, has the potential to bring mobile networks to their knees.  Data volume is only set to increase, as operators scramble to find the best combination of offload technologies and network strategy.  Advances in offloading and network management become more realistic every day.  It is imperative for mobile operators to employ a range of strategies to manage the capacity crunch, whether through network optimisation strategies, offload technologies or data pricing, or a combination of all of these.

Mobile Data Offloading will provide the industry with the views of operators and their various approaches to data offloading, including deploying Femtocells, WiFi offload and offload sharing between operators.  Network economists will analyse data costs and network profitability.  Data experts in mobile operators will look at alternative ways of managing data overload, such as optimising content, better use of radio resource, tiered pricing strategies, sharing data costs with content providers and differentiated packages for heavy users.

The regulatory angle is crucial as the issue of net neutrality is debated in the UK, Europe and the USA.  Ofcom and the European Commission will examine the possibility of net neutrality regulation in Europe and the impact of recent net neutrality regulation in the US will be analyzed.
