Carnival of the Mobilists 238, Here at WIP
Welcome to the 238th installment of the Carnival of the Mobilists. It's a pleasure to welcome the Carnival back to the WIP blog, and to share some of the best in mobile blogging from the past couple of weeks with you. It's hard to believe that it's been nearly five years since Russell and I launched the CotM over at MobHappy. But that fifth anniversary is coming up in about a month, and the current keeper of the tents, Peggy Anne Salz, is looking for input on how to celebrate that milestone, so be sure to send her your thoughts.
Peggy also gets a big thanks for emailing me to remind me about hosting this week
I am at the AppNation event in San Francisco, and my duties had slipped my mind since we've had our hands so full at WIP lately. There are tons of events going on in the mobile space in the next few weeks, including our WIPJam at the Verizon Developer Conference next week. The VDC is shaping up to be a great event, and it's free to attend, so we hope to see you there!
Now, on with the Carnival!
The big news last week was a new CEO for Nokia, a Microsoft exec named Stephen Elop. Over at Mobileslate, Eric Chan has an open letter to Mr. Elop with some thoughts on how he can carry the company forward. Also, since the Carnival took a holiday break last week, we've got a second entry from some folks, like Eric, who also wonders if pay TV companies might like to start subsidizing TV sets.
A major issue facing mobile content providers and developers is how to drive the discovery of their apps and services in an increasingly crowded marketplace. Personalization and recommendation are often cited as a potential solution in this space, and lots of companies are taking aim at it. One such company is Sidebar, and Peggy has an interview with their CEO at MSearchGroove. Peggy also last week submitted a podcast covering mobile marketing in the booming Brazilian market.
Thefonecast.com also sent in a cast for your listening pleasure, where they check in from the Over The Air event in London last week, with interviews with many of the event's organizers and attendees.
To say that the host of the last Carnival, Antoine RJ Wright, is into mobile technology is something of an understatement. I think it might be fair to say he's got a little obsession! Supporting that is his submission, in which he takes a look at some cool thoughts on the Future of Screens from the user interface firm TAT.
I mentioned the booming Brazil mobile market earlier, and MobiThinking follows up that mention with a deeper look into some stats covering Latin America. As they note, while a lot of attention gets focused on the BRIC nations, mobile in Latin America is growing like crazy and offers a big opportunity for content providers, developers and marketers.
From the WIP blog, take a look at my colleague Thibaut's interview with Sam Pickard of Datilo, in which they talk about his companu's app and their development process. The interview's part of a series Thibaut has started going over some of the topics that will be covered at our WIPJam at OSiM in London. We'll also be at a ton of other events over the next few weeks, so let's meet up if you are around!
A couple of other submissions to note this week: Phillip Fitzsimmons says that Symbian development no longer sucks -- well, not as bad, anyway. And over at Mobile in Higher Ed, they check out Harvard's new mobile web site.
Thanks for reading, and watch for next week's Carnival at MJelly.
