Tips for Success: Getting the Most From the NOOK Apps Program

NOOK Developer will be sponsoring the first ever App Zone at the London Book Fair from April 16-18.  With a vibrant and growing developer community, they offer tools and recommendations on how you can develop successful apps for the NOOK.

The NOOK Apps program provides the opportunity for you to reach a vibrant and growing community of mobile app users.  The past year has shown us our users are ready and willing to pay for great content.  While there are many apps that stand out from the crowd, the most successful companies and apps have several things in common.

• Apps appeal to our key demographic, which is unique among mobile gadgets – 70 – 75% female, many of whom are also mothers.  Children’s apps, especially learning and development is a high focal point for NOOK Apps.  While gaming is our most successful category, lifestyle, education, and other apps that enhance the experience of using the device, such as customizable backgrounds are immensely popular.

Another MWC has come and gone, here is a summary of some developer news that came forward this year!

BlackBerry

It wasn’t top secret information that BlackBerry was giving away PlayBooks to all those who attended their Developer's Conference and it was clearly one of the items that attributed to their 3 completely full sessions. Regardless, it was a good opportunity to let everyone know there is success in building on the BlackBerry platform, with 13% of devs making over $100 000.
Other stats included:

  • 75 Million Subscribers and growing
  • 164 markets supported and growing
  • 14 languages supported and growing
  • Averaging 174 Million downloads per month and growing fast
  • Over 2 Billion downloads reached in January 2012
  • Over 60,000 apps available

As for BlackBerry 10 (not to be confused with BASIS' BBX), there was no new information. They just restated that it will support QNX native, Runtime for Android, HTML5 + Webworks and Adobe AIR. Here's their brief...

Get the 10th Edition of the Developer’s Guide to the Galaxy NOW!

If you have attended one of our events in the past, there's a good chance you've picked up a copy of The Developer's Guide to the Galaxy, a great little book on navigating the basics of mobile development put together in conjunction with our friends over at Enough Software. The 10th (!!!) edition of the Guide has been released this week, and it's swelled to more than 200 pages covering a wide variety of topics and platforms.

We'll have hard copies this week at the WIPJam@MWC, but in the meantime, you can grab the PDF from our site. It's well worth keeping a copy around as a reference guide, particularly to give you an overview of new platforms you haven't used before, and to give you an idea of what they require and how their development environments and technologies differ.

And remember the point of the whole thing -- Don't Panic!

Now There’s A Guide for Marketing Your App, Too: Introducing the Guide to the Parallel Universe!

You're probably familiar with the Developer's Guide to the Galaxy, the community project with our friends over at Enough Software that's resulted in tens of thousands of copies of the best brief guide to mobile development being distributed all over the world. We're happy to announce that it now has a sister: The Mobile Developer's Guide to the Parallel Universe!

We were sitting around one time when Caroline said, "Hey, wouldn't it be great if there was something like the Developer's Guide, but for marketing?" She saw a lot of developers hungry for knowledge on how to market and promote their apps, and a lack of resources to help. So she got to work calling up friends and contacts, and got 15 contributors to come together to create this 100-page guide covering:

  • Product planning
  • Product development and lifecycle management
  • Market research
  • Merchandising your app
  • Business Development
  • Distribution
  • Business Models
  • Customer engagement
  • Raising money
