AT&T’s Tea Leaves – What’s ahead for mobile developers in 2011.

* Note:  This is a first in our series of 2011 Predictions.  Check back every day next week for others, and on January 1 for a collection of all of them, and to vote for your favorite.

One of my favourite people in the mobile developer ecosystem is Ed Schmidt from AT&T.  Ed is a Director in their Developer Program which is a nice title and all, but doesn’t really speak to the volume of his knowledge of mobile development nor his passion for developers.  I thought it would be fun to interview him and get his predictions for 2011.

Deeper Apps vs Lighter Apps

As other technologies are evolving around mobile development, Ed sees a trend toward deeper and more capable applications coming in 2011.  Ed’s definition of Deeper Apps is similar to what we at WIP have been calling Mobile Apps 2.0 – a confluence of stronger technology, better tools, and better product/life cycle development.

Ed noted that some of this will come because of ‘the cloud; and the networking based...

Squaring Up With Widality

In the lead-up to Verizon’s Developer Conference 2010, WIP sat down for a frank Q&A with Terry Hughes and Tom Mullen from Widality, to discuss a few highlights from their latest app developer white paper: Squaring up to the app challenge. Meet Terry at the Verizon Developer Conference where he is leading a WIPJam panel on how to stop sucking wind as an app developer!

Some quick background: Widality is the developer of one of the popular BlackBerry business app momentem. The company was recently acquired by Wmode, a leading managed-services provider of mobile Internet services to operators. Now, as a new business unit in Wmode, the team is “expanding the widality of apps”, helping app providers to get above the noise and monetize, by delivering scalable quality services.

Terry is the Head of Market Development for Widality. Tom is the CTO of Wmode.

WIP: Congrats on the merger. Why Wmode?

Terry: Since the launch of our momentem app + service on BlackBerry App World over a year...

Get Yourself Into GetJar’s Gettie Awards

Bruce Jones from GetJar came over to Berlin as a sponsor for our Jam Session at IT-Profits earlier this month, and he shared the exciting news that GetJar had just the day before announced that it had delivered its 1 billionth download. Since then, the company's gone from strength to strength: its CEO, Ilja Laurs, appeared on CNBC talking about the company's success, and it also announced that it closed on its second round of venture funding. So congrats all around to the team at GetJar!

I was able to catch up with Bruce this week for a chat about all the news, as well as to learn more about The Gettie Awards, in which GetJar is recognizing the top apps on a number of different platforms, and giving away tons of great prizes to developers. Entries close June 30, so be sure to visit the Getties site and submit your app!

Carlo Longino, WIP: Hi Bruce! Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do at GetJar.

Bruce Jones, GetJar: I started the first week of May as the Senior...

Ich Bin Ein Berliner! What’s Intel Bringing to WIPJam Next Week?

Berlin is the mobile place to be for WIP in June:

  • Droidcon last week (technically we were still in May)
  • MLOVE ConFestival on the 23-25 of June
  • And of course next week WIP's headquarters move to Berlin for a week, as Carlo comes over from the US to join me for Mobile Monday Berlin and our WIPJam at IT Profits/LinuxTag on the 9th! (There's still plenty of time to register and get your free tickets, so come join us!)

In addition to the Android App Store competition, Droidcon was also full of cool presentations (all available here) and I was able to interview Kerstin Monzel and Jonas Kollberg from Intel, who presented at the event and will be at the WIPJam next week, too.

While California was abuzz with the Google TV announcement, and Intel powered set top boxes, we chatted more about the mobile device side of things.

Intel Atom Developer programWIP:  Judging by the warm tweets welcoming Quake running at 120fps on Moorestown... Your presentation at Droidcon was quite popular!  What was it...

Intel Atom Developer program @ WIPJam

MaryannIannittiWe are pleased to introduce our guest blogger this week.  Maryann Iannitti is the Manager, Intel Developer & University Marketing at Intel.  Intel is a lead sponsor of our WIPJam Session coming up on March 22, 2010 at CTIA Wireless.

Meet the Intel Atom Developer Program team @ WIP JAM CTIA Wireless 2010

The Intel Atom developer program has been designed to provide you with everything you need to develop and sell netbook applications. So, the question I get most often from developers is why netbooks? The netbook market is growing fast at 35 million in 2009 to 139 million in 2013*. Now more than ever, there is a rising demand for applications that have been designed for the netbook form factor and for the mobile, on the go audience. This new program is designed to address this very challenge and to provide you with the support you need to build and sell these applications. The program also provides OEMs and the ecosystem a framework to deliver great new applications directly to...

Qualcomm’s Tips on How to Engage the Mobile Consumer

Mitch Oliver Qualcomm

Leading up to our WIPJam, Day for Developers, on February 18th at MWC, we have asked a number of our WIPJam sponsors to write articles for our readers.  This week, Qualcomm’s submission is provided by Mitch Oliver, Vice President of Ecosystem Development, Qualcomm Incorporated

Five Ways to Engage the Mobile Consumer

Consumers have an expectation of control over their content. This paradigm is well established from their desktop experience, and will undoubtedly extend into mobile. Fueled by the prospect of ubiquitous connectivity and increasingly powerful networks, the always connected consumer has the opportunity to be in command of their own experience.

To a consumer, network and device barriers should be irrelevant. To engage them you must consider their content experience holistically, including but not limited to your mobile offering. Your best strategy for differentiation is to integrate your content into their overall experience – only then can you establish loyalty and...

Alcatel Lucent exposes APIs and a Sandbox for Mobile Developer Support

Francisco Kattan, Alcatel Lucent

January 14th was a busy day of interviews for WIP!  While Thibaut was in London, UK, interviewing GetJar; I was down in the Bay Area where I stopped by to have lunch with Francisco Kattan, Sr. Director Developer Ecosystem at Alcatel Lucent.  I got a little lost and was late, but he graciously took the time to have this interview with me.  He is a veteran in the mobile developer space, so I was particularly interested in his advice for mobile developers; but also to find out how a company like Alcatel Lucent, a traditional infrastructure player, was providing new opportunities for mobile developers.

Caroline: You’ve seen all sides of the mobile industry given your experience with Adobe, Openwave and now Alcatel Lucent; what has been the most significant change for mobile developers over the last few years?

Francisco: The last three years started a new era in mobile that elevated the stature of developers in the ecosystem.  Devices are finally good platforms for consuming...
