App Store Reports
This monthly report is provided courtesy of WIP, and is based on the entries from the WIP App(lication) Store Catalog, the leading resource listing app(lication) stores for mobile developers.
Editor’s Note: Just after the June Report was published, we here at WIP received a letter from Apple’s lawyers. Apple has trademarked, or has filed for trademarks for, the term “app store” in the US, Canada and several other countries. Based on its US trademark -- which is being challenged by Amazon, Microsoft and several other companies -- Apple has demanded that we cease and desist calling this

In this month's WIP App Store Report, we take a look at the thorny issue of app store return policies, and how they could affect developers, and could be improved to help both developers and consumers to lead to a better retail environment and increased sales.
Since the beginning of 2011, more than 150,000 apps have been added to the 5 major platform app stores. Each of these stores has different policies regarding consumer returns and refunds, generally due to technical difficulties or because an app did not live up to the consumer’s expectations.
These return policies can be both good

The Report is a PDF version of a set of the data contained in our App Store Catalog here on the WIP site, along with some additional commentary in to the world of app stores. This month, we take a look at the interest that's sprouting around in-app purchases, seen by many as a big hope for developers to create solid app revenues.
As app stores mature and become more crowded, there’s a race to the bottom for prices of many mobile apps. While some premium games and branded apps are able to hold their purchase prices up

You might have noticed some of the big news from the mobile industry during February: Nokia’s new partnership with Micro- soft, or perhaps something from the big Mobile World Congress confab in Barcelona. But you probably didn’t notice another significant piece of news: the number of stores in the WIP App Store Catalog held

The February edition of the WIP App Store Report is now available, and this month it takes a look at two key issues pertaining to app stores for developers: reach and submissions. Reach is important for pretty obvious reasons: scale drives downloads (in most cases). But reach is just one part of the equation developers should use when determining which stores to target, since submission of apps can become a major timesink.
The problem here is twofold: accurate information on reach is difficult to come by, and the differences in submission from store to store are, often, pointless and do

The number of stores in the catalog grew by only one during the month, edging up to 110 now. But it's the growth during the year that we want to focus on. As you can see from the chart above, one year ago, the WIP App Store Catalog featured just 32 stores; since then, it has more than

This month, the Catalog passed a significant milestone: the 100-store mark. While growth in the number of app stores has slowed somewhat in the second half of the year, the numbers are still swelling, with more and more stores competing for developer attention and consumer eyeballs. But how many app stores do we really need? There are already plenty of them, in some sense -- but many of

We released the latest edition of the WIP App Store Report last week, and in it, we take a closer look at the role aggregators are playing in driving up the number of app stores in the marketplace. We counted 94 app stores when we released the report, but the number in the wiki has already grown by one!
Aggregators play a huge role in the marketplace by supporting app store providers with a number of different models and services. From offering affiliate-based white-label web sites to end-to-end developer support and delivery, there's an aggregation model to suit almost anybody who
